Two laser techniques can be used in lithium battery production

Lithium battery is now everywhere in our daily life. From smart phone to new energy vehicles, it has become the major power source for them. And in the production of lithium battery, there are two kinds of laser techniques that are widely used.


Laser welding
The production of lithium battery involves a pole piece welding procedure which requires welding the battery pole piece and the current collector piece together. The anode material requires welding the aluminum sheet and the aluminum foil. And the cathode material requires welding the copper foil and the nickle sheet. Suitable and optimized welding technique plays an important role in saving the production cost for lithium battery and maintaining its reliability. Traditional welding is ultrasonic welding which is easy to cause insufficient welding. What’s more, its welding head is easy to wear down and its wearing time is uncertain. Therefore, it is likely to lead to low yield. 

However, with UV laser welding technique, the outcome would be totally different. Since the lithium battery materials have higher absorption rate to UV laser light, the difficulty of welding is pretty low. Besides, the heat affecting zone is pretty small, making UV laser welding machine the most effective welding technique in lithium battery production. 

Laser marking
The lithium battery production involves many other procedures, including raw material information, production process and technique, production batch, manufacturer, production date and so on. How to track the whole production? Well, it requires storing these key information in a QR code. Traditional printing technique has the disadvantage of the marking being easy to fade away during transportation. UV laser - the multitasker in PCB manufacturing

3W, 5W,10W,15W,20W,30W.....Just as fiber laser, the power of UV laser has been increasing. In addition to increasing power, the current UV laser also has more features, such as narrower pulse width, multi-wavelength, bigger output power, higher peak power and better absorption by the materials.


UV laser can work on many different kinds of materials, such as plastic, glass, metal, ceramics, PCB, silicon wafer, coverlay and so on. In addition, Ultraviolet laser is a multitasker as well, for it can perform different tasks in different working procedures of a single material processing. Now we take PCB manufacturing as an example. UV laser can perform laser cutting, laser etching and laser drilling on PCB. 

1.PCB cutting

In coverlay and PCB cutting, UV laser is the most ideal option. Coverlay is used for environment insulation and electric insulation so that the fragile semiconductor on the PCB can be well protected. However, coverlay needs to be cut by certain shapes and using UV laser can avoid damaging the released paper. (Other processing methods can easily lead to the coverlay separating from the released paper). As we know, PCB or even flexible PCB materials are very thin and light. UV laser can not only remove the mechanical stress but also reduce the thermal stress to the PCB. 


2.PCB etching

It is quite a complicated process to make the circuit outline on the PCB and in this process, laser etching is needed. Comparing with chemical etching, UV laser etching has faster speed and is more environmental friendly. What’s more, the light spot of the UV laser can reach 10μm, indicating higher etching precision. 

3.PCB drilling

UV laser is widely used in drilling holes with diameter less than 100μm. As miniature circuit diagram is increasingly used, the hole diameter could be less than 50μm. In drilling holes with diameter less than 80μm, UV laser has the biggest productivity.

Is the power of UV laser cutting machine the bigger the better?

Why UV laser marking machine is so different from fiber laser marking machine in price?

 Laser marking machine features delicate printing effect, clear and long lasting marking and is widely used in different industries. But many users find that there is a huge difference in the price of fiber laser marking machine and UV laser marking machine. So is the application.


Although they are both laser marking machine, fiber laser marking machine and UV laser marking machine adopt different laser sources and the laser powers are quite different.
